Report | and wander HIKING CLUB in Mt. Yariand wander journal #96

Mt. Yari, the mountain that everyone dreams of climbing.
The Yarigatake-sanso Lodge, located just below the summit of Mt. Yari in the Northern Alps of Japan, celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2026.

For a century, this mountain lodge has welcomed many a hiker on their way to the Mt. Yari summit.
In a three-way collaboration, and wander has been working with manga artist Tomoko Suzuki since 2013 to create souvenir goods for Yarigatake-sanso Lodge. The previous owner of Yarigatake-sanso Lodge, Koji Hokari, approached Tomoko about the project, and she invited and wander to join the collaboration, bringing together our shared passion for the mountain into our monozukuri.
This year, the collaboration created and released a T-shirt, featuring a special commemorative design, to celebrate the lodge’s 100th anniversary.

To mark this occasion, we visited Matsumoto in Nagano prefecture to meet the people who have fallen in love with Mt. Yari, and who keep a special place for it in their hearts.

Under a clear blue sky, our first stop was to visit Matsumoto-based manga artist Tomoko Suzuki, who is also a Matsumoto City Tourism Ambassador. We ask Tomoko, whose manga capture the beauty of the mountains as well as the joy of hiking, about her relationship with Mt. Yari and the 100-year-old Yarigatake-sanso Lodge.

When we ask her about Mt. Yari, she breaks into a coy smile. “I’m so obsessed with Mt. Yari. I call it Yari-sama,” she says, almost as if Mt. Yari was her oshi1. She tells us that it’s so special to her that simply looking up at the mountain from a distance can make her heart race. The limited-edition 100th anniversary commemorative T-shirts feature a unique illustration of “Yari-Tomoko” holding a cake, that looks like Mt. Yari, high up above her head. It’s infused with her personal message of thanks and congratulations.

1 Oshi (推し) is a person or character a fan chooses to actively support with dedication and enthusiasm: such as an idol, or a fictional character. The word comes from osu (推す), to push or recommend.

The word “ENJOY”, which also features on the T-shirt design, is Tomoko’s most important message. Whether in life or in mountain climbing, there are people who will continue to put one foot in front of the other, despite carrying hardship or pain that may not be visible from the outside. The word ENJOY embodies Tomoko’s desire to give a those people gentle encouragement, to help them keep on going.

As a Matsumoto City Tourism Ambassador, Tomoko also talks about the charms of Matsumoto and its mountains on the radio and other media, and we were lucky enough to have her guide us around the city. Matsumoto is a castle town with views of the Northern Alps of Japan. Time flows at an unhurried pace in its streets, which are lined with attractive kura-zukuri (old earthen storehouse style) buildings, striking in their contrast of black and white, and historic shops. As we walk through the town we come across Tomoko’s illustrations and posters in all sorts of places. These images, which blend seamlessly into the cityscape, express Tomoko’s deep affection for the area and the warmth of her personality, which is equally adored by the local community.

The next morning.

There isn’t a cloud in the sky as we start our ascent up Mt. Yari with the fourth-generation owner of Yarigatake-sanso Lodge, Daisuke Hokari. Standing 3,180m above sea level, Mt. Yari is one of the most iconic peaks of Japan’s Northern Alps. Its beautiful, sharp silhouette has inspired many hikers, and it’s a mountain that many dream of scaling.

Along the trail, Hokari carefully tells us all about the alpine flora, the topography and terrain, and the history and current state of the paths.
During the run up to hiking season in Spring, and also during the hiking season itself, he frequently walks along the hiking routes to check their condition and do maintenance whenever needed. This is because the paths can be eroded or damaged by heavy rain or typhoons.

Landscapes that we would normally walk past without a second thought can be significant to the well-trained eyes of Mr. Hokari, who has walked these mountains for years. As we approach Mt. Yari, with his guidance, we discover some of the mountain’s hidden charms that we may not have noticed if we’d been purely focused on simply climbing the mountain.

After we pass Yarisawa Lodge, the forest gradually gives way to lower vegetation, and the view in front of us opens up. At our feet, alpine plants are in bloom, and the path slowly transforms into a rockier, rougher trail. We stop to quench our thirst with cold spring water and take a short break. From here the serious climbing begins. As we look up, we see the mountain ridgeline stretching endlessly on towards the blue sky. But no matter how far we walk, Mt. Yari remains frustratingly out of sight. Mt. Yari is known for being “near, yet so far”, and I start to appreciate the meaning of this popular hikers’ saying with each step that I take.

The Veratrum stamineum only flowers once every few years. We are in luck this year!

Trail markings help to keep hikers on course. Assuring the safety and security of hikers is also an important part of mountain hut work.

Three hours to Yarigatake-sanso Lodge.

Eventually, we arrive at the area known as the “Green Band”, and get our first view of Mt. Yari. The sharp peak of the mountain, pointing up towards the sky, is even more impressive seen close up, and dominates the view. We instinctively stop walking to take in the magnificent view.

From here the terrain becomes increasingly rocky.
The sun is intense and it’s hot. Our feet feel heavy and we are out of breath.
With a mixture of nerves and excitement, we keep walking, each step bringing us closer to the summit.

After surmounting the final rocky stretch, we arrive at Yarigatake-sanso Lodge.
The sense of achievement of making it this far starts to sink in. As we stand in front of the lodge, with Mt. Yari towering in front of us, the fatigue of the long journey seems to melt away.

Mr. Hokari explains that running a mountain lodge is much more than simply providing accommodation. As well as welcoming hikers, cooking meals and cleaning the lodge, his work also involves building repairs, construction work, managing the hut’s own power-generation system, maintaining hiking routes, and sometimes even assisting search and rescue efforts. None of this work is particularly visible. However, combined together, they are what ensure a safe and secure environment for the people who climb Mt. Yari. He tells us about the importance of undertaking all these behind the scenes jobs, with a strong sense of responsibility.

On the other side of the window, the magnificent Northern Alps mountain ridge stretches out into the distance.
Despite the tranquil landscape, mountain huts are facing increasingly serious challenges, such as the collapse of hiking paths due to heavy rains, changes in the natural environment, and the rising cost of transporting materials.

The situation surrounding the mountain is changing with the times.

The services visitors expect, the strict measures required to ensure their safety, and the need to pass skills on to the next generation of workers must all be carefully balanced as the mountain hut continues to fulfil its role.

To inherit a history of 100 years and to pass that legacy on to the next generation.
I sense that this is at the heart of Mr. Hokari’s commitment to mountain culture—and his deep affection for the mountain hut.

Choosing one to take home as a memento of your hike is all part of the fun.

The next morning, we get ready and put our headlamps on before stepping outside. The cold morning air immediately clears any lingering sleepiness.
Looking up, there are still a few stars shimmering in the night sky, and we are surrounded by the unique tranquility of a mountain morning. As we turn around to look back at the lodge, we see the warm glow of the lights that watched over us through the night.

The same mountain can leave a very different impression depending on your perspective, and what you’re feeling at the time.

The Mt. Yari seen from the city below. The Mt. Yari that towers above you as you climb the mountain. The view from the summit. Each reveals a different face of the mountain.

We didn’t only encounter Mt. Yari on this trip.

People who dream of the mountain.
People who draw the mountain.
People who protect the mountain.

It’s the thoughts and actions of each of these people that have shaped the last century at Yarigatake-sanso Lodge. And their dedication will be passed on as the legacy of that century.
Other people will summit this peak. Mt. Yari will continue to stand here unchanged, and will continue to welcome all those who visit it, and all those who dream of climbing it.
