× and wander HIKING CLUB in Kyotoand wander journal #91

Exploring the hills of Kyoto

In mid-November, as Kyoto’s Autumn foliage was reaching its most spectacular, we co-organised a hiking event with NORDISK CAMP SUPPLY STORE KYOTO, to commemorate the opening of the and wander KYOTO BAL store.

The event took place on an approximately 10 km stretch of the Kyoto Circuit Trail – Higashiyama Course. The city of Kyoto is surrounded by three mountain ranges: Higashiyama, Kitayama and Nishiyama, known collectively as Kyoto Sanzan, or the three mountains of Kyoto. The area on the east side is particularly significant historically as a key route for people and trade, housing the canal that carries water from Lake Biwa to Kyoto, and also the Tokaido road to Edo (Tokyo). The route taken by the group also passes behind some popular tourist attractions, such as Kiyomizu-dera and Kodai-ji, and with the advantage of being easily accessible from the city, is a great way to explore the history and natural landscapes of Kyoto.

Vermilion-tinted Mt. Inari

Today’s meeting point is Keihan Railway’s Fushimi-inari station. As the participants arrive, they are greeted by a row of beautiful vermilion-red pillars, a homage to Fushimi Inari Taisha’s iconic torii gates, known as Senbon Torii (thousands of torii gates). Once everyone has arrived, the staff welcome the group and go over the information for the day. For today’s hike, we have and wander wear and original shoes available to rent for anyone who does not have their own gear, and many of the participants take advantage of this option. With everyone kitted out, we set off under a clear blue sky.

We start off by walking through the grounds of Fushimi Inari Taisha, which are full of lively crowds of visitors, and on to climb up Mt. Inari (233 m). We pass the Gehaiden and Honden as we head towards the Senbon Torii. There are said to be approximately ten thousand torii gates within the shrine grounds. As we walk through the tunnel of vermilion-red gates, we head deeper and deeper into the hills.

From Mitsutsuji, we climb the 400 or so steps to Yotsutsuji, where we take a short break. Gaining altitude, we are suddenly greeted by a panoramic view over Kyoto city. It’s more humid than we expected, and everyone is perspiring a lot. We make sure everyone has enough to drink and adjust our layers of clothing before setting off again.

The forest is a classroom

As we follow the trail signposts, we come across an intriguing signboard saying Kyojotoribe no Mori. Actually, this whole area of evergreen forest is a Satoyama (a Japanese term for the border zones between natural habitats and human settlements) used by the local Kyoto Women’s University for its forestry and environmental education programmes. The forest serves as a classroom for the students where they can observe flora and fauna, and learn about the local natural environment.

Reflecting on the symbiosis of humans and forests

We pass through a tunnel which takes us under a road, before climbing some steep stone steps towards Mt. Kiyomizu (241 m). From here we are entering the mountains behind Kiyomizu-dera and Kodai-ji.

As we follow the trail, we come across numerous signs and learn about all the initiatives being undertaken to protect the forest. Being located close to human habitation, the Satoyama not only provides beautiful seasonal scenery, but the strong deep roots of its trees also help to prevent landslides. However, in recent years, for various natural and man-made reasons, the Kyoto Sanzan area has been changing. Through our hike we learn how local communities, shrines and temples, companies and government bodies are all working together to try and combat this.

ONE POT WONDER
Lunch by ONE POT WONDER

After walking for about two and a half hours we arrive at the Higashiyama Summit Park (approx. 220 m). It’s a large park with benches and an arbour. Mr. Sasaki and Ms. Katsuno of craft boil-in-the-bag food maker, ONE POT WONDER, a familiar companion on our hiking club events, are waiting for us with lunch ready.

Today’s lunch is a Narashino Sausage sandwich with craft whole grain mustard, and a shrimp bisque soup. Everyone looks happy as they tuck into lunch, their tired bodies soaking up the exquisite texture of the fig and cumin mustard, and the warmth of the soup.

After lunch, each participant is gifted an original pin badge from designer Mr. Ikeuchi, and we move to the lookout point for a group photo.

Descending the mountain with memories for souvenirs

Feeling refreshed in both body and mind, we depart the summit park and reluctantly leave Kyoto’s Satoyama behind as we slowly descend the mountain. It is not far now to Keage station and the end of our hike.

At 3 pm, we all arrive safely at the end of our hike. Under the beautifully clear autumnal sky, and with an impressive 1200-year history as our backdrop, we have walked through dappled sunlight and serene forests, and learnt about how human towns and Satoyama can co-exist. This hike along the Higashiyama section of Kyoto’s circuit trail has been a quintessentially Kyoto-style experience, with temples, shrines and forests all coming together to intersect with the city.

This hiking club was organised to celebrate the opening of the and wander KYOTO BAL store, and is a collaboration with NORDISK CAMP SUPPLY STORE KYOTO, which offers a wide range of outdoor goods, centred around Danish brand, NORDISK. We look forward to building an even deeper connection with Kyoto’s natural habitats through more events like this in the future.
