妥協しない生き方

妥協したくない、とは常々思っていますね。その時にできることは、すべてやる。それはスキー選手時代から変わらないのですが、そもそも競技って妥協した時点で終わってしまうような厳しい世界です。結果がすべてなので、妥協なくやっても勝てない時も多いわけですから、妥協は論外です。小学1年生の頃から、そういう世界で生きてきたので、妥協するということに対して恐怖心のようなものもありますし、妥協しないということが体に染みついています。だから、いまやっているスキー作りに対しても選手時代同様の姿勢で取り組んでいます。ただ、タイムで競う競技と違うのは、物作りの場合は受け手があって初めて成立するものなので、正解というものが複数あることです。それがやっぱり難しいですね。
ファットスキーでパウダーを滑りはじめた頃に感じたことがあったんです。「競技で使っていた板とはクオリティにちょっと開きがあるぞ」と。そもそもバックカントリーで滑るという行為は、タイムを競うものではないし、あまりそういう細かい点を気にする人は少ないのかもしれません。でも、競技者として長年やってきた僕からすると滑走感がやや物足りなかった。それを解決できれば、もっと楽しい体験になるはずだと感じたんです。それもあって自分で作り始めたという経緯があるので、とことん妥協せずにクオリティとパフォーマンス、そしてデザインを突き詰めていけば、おのずと自分にとっての正解に辿り着けるんじゃないかな、とは思っています。

A Life without Compromises

“Compromise” is, and will always be, the last thing on my mind. I do the best I can do at all times. I’ve had this in mind ever since I was a kid, from the time when I was competing in ski race. In the world of competition, all that matters is the result, but you will never win the game if you compromise. Obviously, it’s not easy to receive a trophy even if you try your utmost to win, so basically, compromising is out of the question. I’ve lived in a world like that since first grade. That’s why I have some sort of a fear toward compromising and the mindset of “not compromising” is deeply entrenched in my soul. This mindset has led to my attitude towards my work today; I make skis with the similar attitude that I had during my competitive career. However, my current career is different in a sense that it has multiple correct answers. How good or bad the design or the quality of a product is, is not determined by a specific measurement, like time in competitive skiing, but by the users. There’s no single right answer, and that is what makes this job so challenging. Just when I started to use fat skis for powder conditions, I noticed one thing. I realized that there’s a gap in quality between the fat skis and the skis for competitive skiing. Of course, you don’t compete on speed for backcountry skiing, so, it may be odd to fuss over the details. As a former competitive skier, however, I was not quite satisfied with its performance. That was when I felt that if I can improve the glide and speed, I could make everyone’s skiing experience much more enjoyable. This realization led to the launch of my brand. Because it is my own brand, I can pursue the quality, performance, and the design without compromising, and I hope that eventually, I can discover what I believe to be the true answer.

楽しむための
機能性という目線

僕の目線からすると、身につけるウェアは「こうでなければならない」というものと「必ずしもそうじゃなくてもいい」という2つの種類があるんです。たとえばハードな山に入るのであれば、徹底的に機能にこだわりますが、そこまでじゃない山であれば、必ずしもハイパフォーマンスなもので固める必要はないと思うんです。やはり気分が高揚するようなもののほうが楽しいですし、僕が作るスキーにしてもグラフィックは大切にしています。街で着るものなら、なおさらデザインが大事ですよね。
僕は街と山、両方で生きている人間ですから、その2つを繋いでくれるウェアとして、アンドワンダーは優れていると感じています。機能だけじゃなく、洋服本来がもつ魅力である、着ることで感じられる高揚感もある。作り手の人たちも山やスキーをやる人ですから、単なるアウトドアファッションではなくて、きちんとフィールドで使えるものも多いです。
今日着ているハイロフトフリースですが、街と山の両方で違和感のないデザインが気に入っています。素材の切り替えや襟の作りなどちょっとしたことなんですけど、それがオンリーワンなデザインに繋がっているところも、同じように物を作る者として素直にすごいなと感じます。

Pursuing Functionality to
Deliver an Exciting User Experience

In my view, the clothes I wear can be distinguished into two types: one is “it has to be like this” type of clothes and the other, more flexible, “it doesn’t always have to be like this” type of clothes. If I am going to challenge a course for expert mountaineers, I would prepare a full set of high performing techwear, but if that is not the case, such functionality is not necessarily needed. There’s no doubt to the fact that we can enjoy more when we wear something that uplifts our feelings, which is exactly why as for the skis I design, I also put importance on the graphics. If it’s something that you use more often in your daily life, the design would be even more so important. In this respect, and wander products are very well designed. I spend my time both in the mountains and in town, but it seamlessly connects the two completely different worlds. Not only does it have functionality, but it also allows the users to enjoy what they wear, which is one of the essential aspects of fashion. Since the designers of the brand also enjoys mountain activities as well as skiing themselves, and wander items do not just end up as “fashionable outdoor clothes”, but it’s also durable and practical in the field. The “high loft fleece” that I’m wearing today is a reliable warm layer with a simple design for both the mountains and in town. Its mixed-material design and the stand collar ― although it may seem like small details ― makes this a unique and one-and-only item. As a designer and a creator, I simply respect their passion for what they do and their quality of their work.

北海道出身。3歳からスキーを、7才より競技スキーを始める。オリンピック出場を目指して全日本ナショナルチームに所属するが怪我によりその夢を断念。
大学卒業後は、プロスキーレーサー、スキークロスレーサーを経て、フリースキーヤーとして国内外で活動した後、2002年にスキーブランド「VECTER GLIDE」をスタートさせ、現在に至る。

Born and raised in Hokkaido, he started skiing at the age of three and began competitive skiing at seven. Aiming to compete in the Olympics, he joins the Japanese national team, but gave up on his dream after a serious injury. After graduating university, he became a professional ski racer as well as a ski cross racer, and then, makes a successful transition to a global free-skier. In 2002, he starts his new career as a founder of a ski brand called “VECTER GLIDE”, delivering sophisticated, high-quality products to the market down to the present day.
